The Foundation of Prayer

Posted by Rose Anderson on

A few years ago, I was invited to join a group of friends to pray on a weekly basis.  At first my schedule was just too full with home schooling but then I was able to find space to join them.  Once I did, I realized a power that I had grossly underestimated in my life.  I learned that praying with a few other believers together on a regular basis unleashed the power of the Holy Spirit in my life in a way that I had not experienced before.  After this, I made prayer with these friends a high priority, no matter how busy my schedule was.   Yes, we can pray at home alone and we should pray at home alone, but joining with even one other person is somehow different.  Jesus Himself said that “where two or three are gathered in my Name, there I am in the midst of them.”  Of course, He is present with us alone as well, but I can tell you that praying in a group with other believers is special.

Obviously, there is nothing magical about this.  It looks ordinary on the surface.  However, when we lift our hearts together in praise of the Lord, and when we bring each other's needs before Him, it feels like we are truly coming before the Throne of the King. We feel Heard. We feel His Peace.  We feel rest as we trust in His Sovereign yes or no.  We feel a closer kinship with each other, too, that is sweet and fulfilling.

Over the course of the last few years with these dear sisters of mine, we have seen amazing answers to so many prayers, big and small.  We get to marvel together as we see Him answer.  Sometimes a situation really does not change a lot but we change instead.  I have learned to trust more and more.  I have learned how to rest in Him.  I have learned that He loves my children more than I do. I have learned that He loves me much more than I can imagine.  I have learned that I am not in control but He is and that this is much much better.  These are things I knew before in my head, but as we have prayed together, the truths have sunk into my heart.  I am so much more at peace in general and I worry less than I have ever worried.  (I used to be a HUGE worrier!!)  He is always teaching me about submission to His Sovereign Care.

Ladies, I can tell you that praying with my small group using the Scriptures has been one of the biggest influences in my own walk with the Lord.    I cannot encourage you enough to do this.  If you are not sure where to begin, you could come to prayer time just before the Sunday services.  Buster leads us in prayer and praise and you will feel the Lord in our midst and leave with His peace.  What a blessing that He gives us in joining with our brothers and sisters with one heart!  Praying that all of you will have this joy!
