The Lord's Prayer Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

June 07, 2026 | Buster Brown

"Pray then like this: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.'"  Matthew 6:9-13

Heidelberg Catechism Question 125
Q: What is the fourth petition?

A: "give us this day our daily bread”; that is, be pleased to provide us with all things necessary for daily living, so that we may acknowledge you to be the only fountain of all good, and that neither our care nor hard work, nor even your gifts, can profit us without your blessing; and therefore, we may withdraw our ultimate trust from all creatures and place it in you alone."

• The fountain of all good (taste).

• We are able to continually cry out, Abba, Father, by virtue of the cross and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 4:4-7)

"Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares the Lord, for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water."  Jeremiah 2:12-13

“The enjoyment of God is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied. To go to heaven, fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here. Fathers and mothers, husbands, wives, or children, or the company of earthly friends, are but shadows; but God is the substance. These are but scattered beams, but God is the sun. These are but streams. But God is the ocean. Therefore, it becomes us to spend this life only as a journey toward heaven, as it becomes us to make the seeking of our highest end and proper good, the whole work of our lives; to which we should subordinate all other concerns of life. Why should we labour for, or set our hearts on, anything else but that which is our proper end, and true happiness.”
The Christian Pilgrim by Jonathan Edwards, Volume 2, page 244

• Blessings/gifts of God are profitable as we give God the glory (knowledge). The importance of crying out, “hallowed be your name” (profitable blessing) (Psalm 84:10-12).

(That you may obey the Lord your God)

"That you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son's son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey."
Deuteronomy 6:2-3

"And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, that it may go well with you."  Deuteronomy 6:18

"And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are this day."  Deuteronomy 6:24

The jealousy of God defined…

A: God continually seeks to protect his own honor

B: The jealousy of God is the measure of his zeal for our happiness in him (the linked chain of joy)

APPLICATION:

"'Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."  Matthew 6:25-34
